A Class on the Lenormand

by Luke- SpellBox Reader

Saturday afternoon greeted me with the opportunity to share the wisdom of the Lenormand oracle with some new students. Lenormand is my primary tool of choice as a professional reader here at SpellBox. My first introduction to cartomancy was a Lenormand deck of cards. I was immediately enchanted by the mysterious yet simple symbolology on each card. They felt intuitive and easier to grasp than tarot, but equally capable of delivering clear, practical advice and messages. I still find this in every reading I conduct or class I teach.

The class began by taking an original pack of playing cards and adorning them with words, drawings and prompts to aid in remembering each card’s meaning. The clover, the heart, the rider, the star… each like a new word in a new language.

We began with simple spreads. I provided some insight and knowledge from my many years of reading and demonstrates how they could be used from the most mundane of concerns, right down to complex philosophical questions. The final part of our class was a demonstration of the Grand Tableau. This complex spread uses all 36 cards in the deck, laid out in a large rectangular pattern that symbolises a map of the querent’s future. This is the most complex part of the class to teach, but it enables the student to have a view into the mind of a reader and how we deduce some of our predictions using a variety of traditional techniques. Reading the Grand Tableau is an artform in itself. It can take an unbelievable amount of time to pick it all apart. The power of the Lenormand is in its symbolism which can cover all aspects of the querent’s life – home, financial, relationship and personal concerns. Everything has its place in the Grand Tableau.

Like my analogy earlier, learning to divine is like learning a new language. I encouraged students to take heart and not be discouraged if they struggled at first. We must become familiar with the cards. Playing with them, holding them, pretending to read with them, engaging with them… eventually the symbols become part of us. We see them in dreams and all around us. When one takes up cartomancy, they join a long and respected lineage of diviners that stretches far into the past. For this reason alone, I choose to continue to share the magic of divination to continue this legacy.
