Candle Magick Class Reflections

As students began to enter class on Saturday, I watched as they gazed at the assortment of mysterious candles, oils and ritual tools before them on the table. This class was to be an introduction to one of the most overlooked arts in witchcraft – that of candle magic. The humble candle features in almost all rites of modern witchcraft. A spell or ritual without a candle is almost unheard of! But the candle holds many secrets within itself and provides a direct connection to the most potent and volatile element of all in sorcery; the power of fire.
As stated by Danae Moon, SpellBox witch and proprietress, the candle provides a direct link to the four elements. Obviously, the flame, but also the melted wax as the water, the soot as the earth and the vapor as air. Candles are used for a variety of different occult purposes. But in this class, I wanted to impress upon our students how the candle is a standalone tool that an entire ritual or spell can be based around.
We began by covering the various uses of traditional oil formulations, botanicals and powders that can be used to feed a candle. Students took into account lunar phases, planetary influences and hours. They intuitively selected candle colours and took up a beautiful oil blend prepared by a SpellBox witch. They inscribed their desires on the candles and then meditated on their intentions by the beat of a drum.
As each student went through the process of enchanting their candle, they called upon their guardian spirits, familiars, ancestors and deities. The darkness was illuminated with the beautiful glow of each candle as it crackled into life. I explained how from the moment their candle is lit, it is both a physical expression of their intention, but also an act of divination. As always, it was a blessing to share this class with a circle of new witches. There is nothing more empowering to me than seeing people feel and access their personal power through the art of witchcraft.
