Witch’s Sabbat: Lammas/ Lughnasadh
February 1st – 2nd
Witch’s Wheel of the Year:
The Goddess holds life in her womb.
The God enters the Underworld.
Lughnasadh, another name associated with this sabbat, finds its origins in Lugh, the Celtic Sun God who presided over the arts, poetry, magick, and truth.
The sabbat of Lammas falls between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. It derives from harvest festivals of the Northern Hemisphere however similar celebrations are universal.
Lammas is a time to acknowledge the gifts of the Earth, our food. The charm associated with the sabbat is the corn dolly, made from the husks to represent the pregnant Earth Goddess.
Universal myths speak of the Corn or Grain Goddess.
Her Celtic name is Danu, Mother of the Tuatha Dé Danann, in Greece, Demeter, and in Rome, Ceres. In solar festivals of America’s First Nations, she is Grandmother Corn. These Goddesses are the harvest made divine, they nurture, their gift is Life.
Nature myths were born when our ancestors were at one with the heartbeat of the Goddess. Like our ancestors, we all share the same Mother- Earth. Pause to reflect and give thanks.
