Halloween in Australia

31st of October 2025 (Southern Hemisphere)

Traditionally, the 31st of October in the Southern Hemisphere is Beltane Eve on the Witch’s Wheel of the Year.

However, the celebration of Halloween with all its symbolism, remains at the original Northern Hemisphere date in Australia.

Looking deeply into both myths you will find they are similar after all.

At Samhain and Beltane, the Veil is at its finest, the faery gates open, the world of the living and the dead meet.

Both seasonal gateways are an interplay of life and death.

As a community event, Halloween has been embraced in Australia.
I believe it is one of the most magickal nights of the year.
The energy in the street opens a portal to the other side, we are pagan again, we reveal the shadow within, we connect with the invisible, we have fun.
There isn’t any other community event that offers the chance to dress up, to embrace the shadow and celebrate the spirit world.

For fifteen years we have been decorating our house with flashing skull lights, cobweb and jack-o-lanterns. On the evening of October 31st the children begin to arrive around 4pm. The little ones start early.
We have had a whole kindergarten come ten years ago, now they come as ghostly teenagers.

The street is vibrant with enchantment: witches, faeries, devils, the beautiful and the macabre come calling for treats.
Some move in groups, a few alone in a last-minute costume, a family of zombies, teenage girls dressed as Wednesday Adams, a four-year old as Batman out for trick-or-treat for the first time.

The energy, the make-believe bewitches everyone with otherworldly energy.
Magick awakes, there is a thrill about, true fun, an edge of fear.
We all connect and for that time, we seem to know, we are on the same mysterious path.

I can’t wait.
